Tim Needham

BAppSci, BAppSci (Physio)

Tim Needham has over 17 years of experience as a physiotherapist and is well known in the sporting world in his high performance role as senior physiotherapist for the Sydney Swans AFL club where he has worked for the past 11 years. In that time he has helped the team to reach three grand finals, including the Swans premiership in 2012. Tim has particular expertise with knee injuries, including ACL rehabilitation and prevention. He is also particularly well versed in treating hamstring injuries, not to mention the myriad of ‘niggling’ injuries a team of athletes would endure over the course of any season. Under Tim’s expert guidance, his team works to ensure seamless care in order for you to reach your physical goals as soon as possible.

 
 
 

Lucy Clay

BAppSci (Exs & Sp Sci), MPhty, APAM

Lucy has over 10 years experience in leading Sports Physiotherapy practices across Sydney & London. She has invaluable sports physio experience working with Sydney AFL clubs as their lead physiotherapist. Adding to her diverse experience is her skills in the corporate world, assessing workplaces and consulting with large organisations regarding workplace ergonomics. Her particular interests include knee, ankle and shoulder injuries, and post-operative rehabilitation. Recently she completed her APPI Pilates equipment coursework, and loves incorporating Pilates into her rehabilitation. She looks to utilise exercise rehab, Pilates, manual therapy (including dry needling) as well as education for her patients on active recovery.

Dr David samra

MBBS (Hons), FACSEP, B App Sci

Dr David Samra specialises in all areas of sport and exercise medicine including non-surgical orthopaedics. He helps his clients through diagnosing, exercise prescription, dietary optimisation, injection treatments with the desired outcome of lifestyle optimisation. He is interested in areas including metabolic optimisation and weight loss, osteoarthritis and tendon pain as well as specialising in Complete Concussion Management. Upon graduating from a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney, Dr Samra found his niche in caring for athletes. He has worked as a doctor for the Sydney Swans, Volleyroos, Penrith Panthers and Cricket Australia just to name a few.

 
 

Hip and Knee Surgeons

 
 

Dr Phil Huang

Director BEng(Hons), MPhil CANTAB, MBBS(Hons), FRACS(Orth), FAOrthA

Phil is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. After graduating with his medical degree, Phil spent his junior years at Royal North Shore Hospital and completed his orthopaedic training in NSW. In his final year as a registrar, Phil worked at the Mater Hospital under the guidance of Professor Leo Pinczewski, Professor Justin Roe and Professor Bill Walter Jr during which time he assisted in over 450 ACL reconstructions.

This cemented his interest in conditions around the hip and knee and he completed his sub-specialty fellowship with Dr Michael O’Sullivan and Dr Matthew Lyons at the Mater Hospital for a further 12 months in complex hip and knee revisions. Following this Phil was awarded the coveted ISOC Travelling Fellowship. With only 1 fellowship awarded globally each year, Phil was able to complete further sub-specialty training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (voted best hospital in the world), HSS in NYC (voted best orthopaedic hospital in the USA) where he was able to enhance his training in robotics and cartilage restoration procedures. Phil also has a keen interest in upper and lower limb osseointegration and performs surgery with the Integrum implant on amputees.

 
 
 

Dr Matt Lyons

MBBS FRACS (Orth)

Dr Lyons graduated from Medicine at the University of New South Wales with honours in Exercise Physiology in 2000. He completed his basic surgical training at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and was then selected for the Australian Orthopaedic Association Advanced Training Scheme in 2006. This training led him to the Mater Hospital and the North Sydney Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Practice where his talent for surgery and excellent rapport with patients was identified. 

Becoming a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Lyon developed a subspecialty interest in disorders of the hip and knee. He performs arthroscopic, reconstructive and replacement surgery of the hip and knee with a particular interest in revision arthroplasty for failed and infected joint replacements.

 
 
 

Dr Leo Pinczewski

MBBS FRACS (Orth)

A graduate of Sydney University, Professor Leo Pinczewski completed his orthopaedic training in Arthritis Surgery in Edinburgh before returning to commence practice in Sydney in 1984. He is internationally recognised for his research and development in the field of Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction and joint replacement surgery, having performed over 15,000 ACL reconstructions. He continues his clinical research whilst also being a co-founder of the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre.

Along with many publications and internationally recognised journals and awards, he was awarded the Excellence in Surgery Award from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, being the only Orthopaedic Surgeon to have ever received this prestigious award. Professor Pinczewski has been invited to demonstrate his surgical techniques in 20 countries to date and is frequently invited to present his research at international forums. For three years he delivered an Instructional Course Lecture in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury and Reconstruction at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

 
 

Shoulder Surgeons

 
 

Dr Allan Young

MBBS, MSpMed, PhD FRACS (Orth)

Dr Allan Young completed his surgical training in Sydney, for which he was awarded the Gordon-Taylor medal by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for achieving the highest marks across all surgical disciplines. Dr Young completed post-fellowship training in shoulder surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital. In addition, he spent one year learning advanced shoulder surgery techniques.

In addition to medical and orthopaedic surgery qualification, Dr Young has completed a Masters in Sports medicine at the University of New South Wales and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. He specialises in rotator cuff repair, osteoarthritis, total shoulder replacement, reverse shoulder replacement, reconstruction and management. Dr Young combines his clinical knowledge and experience with scientific evidence to provide the best advice and management possible as a shoulder surgeon.

 
 
 

Dr Haren Nandapalan

B. Med, FRACS(Orth), FAOrthA

Dr Nandapalan is an Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon with subspecialty interests and training in Shoulder, Elbow and Hand Surgery. He specialises in arthroscopic, reconstructive and arthroplasty surgery for sports and degenerative conditions. He values teaching as well as surgery, currently working as a clinical lecturer at The University of Sydney. 

He completed his undergraduate medical degree in 2008 before being accepted into the Australian Orthopaedic Training Program in 2012 where he worked at the largest trauma centre and upper limb unit in the country. After becoming a fellow of the Royal Australasia College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA). In 2018, Dr Nandapalan then completed a world renowned Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship with the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute (SSRI).

Dr Michael Symes

MBBS (HONS) FRACS BAPPSC (PHYSIO) HONS FAORTHO MPH

Dr Michael Symes is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery and complex lower limb trauma. Dr Symes completed his general Orthopaedic training in NSW in 2017, before undertaking subspecialty training in Canada, the USA and Australia where he learnt advanced techniques in foot and ankle surgery including total ankle replacements, minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, and reconstruction after complex lower limb trauma. He has also completed subspecialty training in reconstruction for neuromuscular and spasticity related disorders. 

Dr Symes training and background has led him to understand the importance of multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to the care of his patients. He prides himself on his strong communication style and commitment to his patients. He specialises in areas including; ankle replacements, arthroscopic and minimally invasive foot and Ankle Surgery, Complex Lower Limb Trauma and Neuromuscular and Spasticity Lower Limb Reconstruction.

 
 

Spine Surgeons

 
 

Dr Randolph Gray

MBBS, FRACS, FAorthA

Dr Gray completed orthopaedic surgery training in Sydney with the Australian Orthopaedic Association and was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2008. He undertook postgraduate fellowship training in adult and paediatric spinal surgery at Toronto Western Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. 

His scope of practice covers adult and paediatric spinal disorders, including surgical management of paediatric scoliosis, adult degenerative disease and deformities, spinal trauma and tumours. Dr Gray also has a special interest in Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (MISS), for which he did specialised training in Canada. 

 
 
 

Dr Sean Suttor

MB BS BSC(MED)FRACS FAORTHA

Dr Suttor was awarded the Gordon Gordon-Taylor medal for the highest mark in the surgical training team in 2003. He undertook orthopaedic training with the Australian Orthopaedic Association in Sydney and is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. 

Dr Suttor undertook subspecialty training in spine surgery, with a fellowship at the Royal North Shore hospital in Sydney. Subsequently, he completed a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine fellowship in Canada, with training in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Deformity, Tumour, Trauma and Arthroplasty.

 
 

Hand Surgeons

 
 

Dr Brahman Sivakumar

MBBS BSci (Med) MS FRACS FAOrthA PFET

Dr Brahman Sivakumar is an orthopaedic surgeon who has sub-specialised in the management of hand, wrist and peripheral nerve conditions. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of New South Wales in 2007, Dr Sivakumar underwent orthopaedic training at centres throughout NSW and QLD. He completed his surgical training in 2017, before sub-specialising in hand surgery via the Post Fellowship Education Training [PFET] programme under the auspices of the Australian Hand Surgery Society. He also completed the Carl Zeiss Microsurgery Fellowship at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India, and will maintain his skills by undertaking training in the United Kingdom and Europe in the future.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Sivakumar has a strong interest in research and academics. He has authored over 35 peer-reviewed publications and a book chapter and presented both locally and internationally. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, where he is undertaking a combination of clinical and laboratory research.

Dr Sivakumar has both public and private hospital appointments, and performs surgery on all conditions of the hand, wrist and peripheral nerves, as well as general orthopaedic trauma. Current appointments:

DR PETER SCOUGALL

MBBS, FRACS, FAorthA

Dr Peter Scougall is a Hand and Wrist Surgeon, with over 20 years in private practice.

He specialises in the surgical treatment of traumatic and elective hand and wrist conditions, including sports injuries, fractures, dislocations, Dupuytren’s contracture, tumours, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, ganglions and tendon and nerve conditions.

Special interests include sports injuries, acute wrist fractures and dislocations, finger fractures, tendon injuries and Dupuytren’s contracture.

Dr Scougall graduated with Honours from the University of Sydney in 1984. After completing his Orthopaedic training in Newcastle, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1994. Following a Trauma Surgery Fellowship in Innsbruck, Austria, he returned to Australia for Hand and Microsurgery Fellowships in Sydney (Sydney/St Luke’s Hospital Hand Units) and Melbourne (St Vincent’s Hospital).
